The meaning of life, the universe, and everything.
Self-Esteem
I have warily watched the Dove True Beauty campaign as it is related to both my professional life, and my personal interests. The campaign released this video recently: http://youtu.be/XpaOjMXyJGk This merited a range of responses. Being that it came from a marketing-driven company, it is not surprising that it hit many marks dead on for moving results. Inevitably there are also d...
Meaningful Choice
Here are your options: 1.) Get a $20 2.) Have a finger severed without anesthesia. 3.) Get $5 Make your choice. What will it be? If you aren't a severe sadist or suffer from a dysmorphic condition, you peak an eyebrow and pick #1 without much thought. Why? It is not a hard choice, it is not a complicated choice, and it has an obvious answer.   Choose! Choice is the charac...
Video games let you see the real person?
There is a lot of foundation that goes into this discussion. I will not rehash all of it here as that is many books' worth on its own, but I will try to create a bread crumb trail. Precept #1: Rules are artificial, created by humans in an attempt to control our world Simply put, there are no hard and fast rules. We have ideals, morals, and self-fueled compunctions. For example, we don't want t...
The Team Dynamic: The Grand Triangle
The triangle is an important structural shape in geometry and construction. The nature of the shape is such that force exerted on any point or side is distributed over the rest of the structure. This lends it great strength and a simple sort of fortitude. So too is the simplest design of the Team Dynamic in WoW. The three components of the group, the tank, healer, and damage dealer, form an int...
The Team Dynamic, Part 3: The Damage
The team design in WoW stands on three legs. The tank is the frontman/woman who takes the attention and punishment of the enemy and protects the rest of the group. The healer helps counteract the threat of the enemy that is not or cannot be avoided, and preserves the team's lives. The third leg is that of the work horses, the damage dealers.  Just because your tank can take the beating well eno...
The Team Dynamic, Part 2: The Healer
What is required of a healer is actually somewhat distorted in the minds of many. The requirements of a healer dance on the pivotal eternal turning point: death. It is not the healer's job to keep everyone at full health, nor is it their job to ensure everyone lives. It is the healer's job to make sure that the team survives where and how it needs to in order to succeed at their challenge. ...
The Team Dynamic, Part 1: The Tank
When a character operates alone, you have the simple imperative to live. You have many tools to do so while defeating your opponents but the game is simple and there is little more nuance than the design of a single class to dictate your challenge. When you put together a group of characters, however, those class details take on a special nuance. Each of the characters can combine their abili...
WoW in Perspective
What does it mean to understand a thing? Most things in this world are sufficiently complex that you never really know it, inside and out, but rather we build understandings. We understand that when we turn on our computer and click the icon to start our browser that we can type in a name, an address, and go to that page we like to read. Relatively few people who use browsers really know ho...

Satorri? Who’s that?

Posted By: admin on February 20, 2010 in - Comments: No Comments »

Hello, my name is Ethan. Since around 2005 I have been penning Gaming literature under the name Satorri.
It is my intent to use this space to discuss many topics as they pertain to the video games; mechanisms, gameplay, culture, psychology, and all the many other amazing topics that arise from an online game of its magnitude.

Who am I? I am just a humble player. Yes, I did. If you don’t know what just happened, it is OK, I forgive you.

I think, a lot. One of my favorite hobbies is building working understandings of systems. By day, I am paid to do this as an engineer. By night, I do it for fun in video games!

In WoW (Terenas, Magetheridon) you may know me as:

Szarigan (Zair-eh-gan) = Shaman (Resto 4 Life! Except that stint in WotLK)

Osyras (Oh-sigh-ress) = Death Knight (usually a Blood Tank)

Kalya (Cahl-yeh) = Druid (usually a Tree, Feathers appear occasionally)

Vaalhalla (Vahl-haul-ah)= Paladin (Bi. Holy and Prot!)

Nymi (Nihm-ee) = Priest (usually Discipline)

Satorri (Sah-toe-ree) = Rogue (always loved Assassination)

Tyrask (Tear-ask) = Warrior (Prot Monster)

Sylestrazsa (Sill-eh-strawz-sah) = Hunter (BM Tank starring Rufus the Tank, Survivalist or Beastmaster for damages)

Desja (Desh-ah) = Mage (Arcane for the KABOOM! Pyromaniac nonetheless.)

Nicodymus (Nee-ko-dee-muss) = Warlock (Demons inside! Professor of RAWR)

Amatirasu (Ah-mah-te-RAH-seh) = Warlock (Destruction and Demonology)

Tolun (Toh-len) = Dorf Shaman (Resto and FIST WEAPONS)

Kymi (Kim-ee) = Death Knight (Powerhouse Unholy DPS)

This is most of my army, and I love them, each and every one.

I have been playing WoW a very long time. I started during the original Beta Test, but decided not to play at release because I knew how easily I could get sucked into the game and I had school to mind. 6 months after release when school was no longer an issue and friends were playing, I picked it up and never looked back.

In SWTOR (on Space Slug, Draconis Legacy):

Major Graevus = Commando Medic

Master A’nya = Jedi Shadow, Kinetic Tank

Drayk Draconis = Gunslinger, Buckleswasher, Credit Hound

Zatosha = Jedi Guardian, Blind Swordswoman

Cipher Agent Arinya = Imperial Operative, Medical Specialist

Dravyn = Bounty Hunter, Powermech Shield Tech Specialist

Kalyna = Sith Marauder, BOO

Revik = Sith Sorcerer, Universal Power Supply

SWTOR is a heap of fun, and I expect I’ll stick with it so long as there are new things to do, and friends to enjoy it with!

Thank you for reading, I hope you find something of value in the traveler’s trunk that is my compendium.
